Technique for Head Massage
Start by pouring oil on the top of the head. This oil is then spread all over the head down to the temples using the fingers. For hair loss and other problems of the hair, the strokes should go from the top of the head downwards. Try to go along the seemanta marma areas and massage the scalp. Next, additional oil is poured on the cowlick (shikha marma). Continue rubbing this oil all over the head, twisting the hair in a clockwise direction at the roots. Lastly, gently press the head between both hands, simultaneously moving one hand forward and the other backward, then repeating.
When oil is applied to the head it gets absorbed into the scalp and reaches to the roots of the hair. This nourishes, lubricates and strengthens the hair roots and skin of the scalp, preventing hair loss and premature graying. It helps to improve circulation to the head and relaxes the muscles and nerve fibers. This helps to refresh both the mind and the body, relieving tension and fatigue. Massage to the head improves circulation of spinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord. It also increases the release of hormones and enzymes necessary for the growth of the brain and relaxation of the body. Additionally, massage to the head increases Prana, the subtle aspect of Vata dosha in the body. Massage to the eyebrows and forehead improves eyesight and the power of concentration. Head massage should be included in our daily health schedule.
